Val Meyer Hall

I have always enjoyed drawing and over the years I have tried various different media including painting, ceramics, sewing and recently stained glass, but my greatest love is to work with silk fabric.
I learned about Batik (wax resist and dyes on silk or cotton) when I was in my twenties and have worked at this ever since. I have been inspired by nature, animals birds, plants, flowers and landscapes, but I also have a great love of naive medieval pictures and have made many Batiks inspired by 15th century manuscript paintings as well as early stained glass.. I had my first solo exhibition in 1981 in Ashwell, Hertfordshire.
After moving to East Anglia I was inspired once more by landscape and nature and continued to do Batik as a wonderfully enjoyable hobby. I have brought up 5 children and worked for a National charity now called Shine.
Whilst living in Suffolk I was lucky to have a studio on the farm where we lived and regularly exhibited my Batiks in local exhibitions. I ran art groups for children and adults
I moved to Mellis in 2007 in order to care for my elderly parents, as well as working from home and spending time with our fast growing family. In my spare moments I began to create quilts and wall hangings as I felt that I wanted my artworks to be useful as well as beautiful.
Since February 2010, when I was made redundant from my charity job I have been able to spend far more time being creative and have been delighted to join MellisArts. I have been involved in developing the Gallery at the Railway Tavern and the wonderful Mellis telephone box community project. I am currently illustrating a children’s book and working on commissions.
